Does your significant other have that one thing they love. Something that they could talk about for hours on end. Something that makes them light up, and get so excited? Mine does, and its Dirt.... Yes, you read that right, dirt. He just LOVES dirt, and anything to do with it.
We have looked at many of farms. His first 'test' is to go out to the field, pick up a handful of soil, and feel it. He feels it, like I would feel a shirt in the store. Just by rubbing it between his fingers, he could tell you if its good draining soil, or poor, and that first little 'rub' determines if its a contender or not. If he checks the location and he knows farms in the area and how their soil is, and if its poor or just 'okay', it doesn't even get a second look, and its on to the next. Sometimes it's nice, as it doesn't waste time, but other times, I just wish the soil was good, because that kitchen or that barn could have been mine.
Soil, is his 'other half', and I don't say that lightly. He gets more excited to talk about soil than anything else... yes, even me, and I don't mind. The fact he is SO passionate about it, makes me love him even more. Sometimes I feel left out in a conversation because I have no idea about soil, but I am slowly learning. I even spent an evening last week listening to him and 2 others speak about soil health, and how to make your farm more productive. It was neat listening and actually seeing the difference with my own eyes. Then to see my farmer talk to other people who actually want to learn about his passion, was amazing.
This past year, has been all about Soil, and making Soil type maps. My Farmer, and Marissa's farmer, have been working their tails off creating Soil Type maps for their farms, and for the farming company my farmer works for. This winter, I have heard more about soil, and have learnt more about soil than anything else.
My farmer comes home after a day of soil sampling, and you can just see the joy in his face. He gets a rush from soil sampling, like I would get from riding a horse, or from shopping (yes, I love shopping that much).
A few people have told my husband, "you're smart, why don't you do something else other than farming" and his reply is always "cut me open, and I bleed dirt"
So there you have it folks, dirt is in his veins.

P.S. The process of creating a soil type map is extensive. Our next blog will go into detail about Soil Type Maps, so if your interested, keep an eye out for it!
